Brainspotting Therapy in Maui and throughout Hawaiʻi

‍ ‍

Brainspotting is a trauma-processing approach that uses eye position, body awareness, and sustained attention to help identify where unresolved experiences remain activated in the nervous system. The basic premise is that where you look can influence what you feel. A particular point in the visual field may correspond with a noticeable increase in emotion, physical sensation, memory, tension, or internal activation.

Rather than relying primarily on explanation or analysis, Brainspotting helps us stay with that activation long enough for the brain and body to process it in a different way. This can be useful when someone understands a problem intellectually but continues to experience the same fear response, shutdown, tension, emotional intensity, or relational pattern.

‍ ‍

What Brainspotting Involves

‍ ‍

We begin by identifying a specific focus for the session. This may be a memory, a recurring emotional response, a physical sensation, a relationship pattern, or something that continues to feel unresolved even though you understand it intellectually.

I then help you notice where the activation is strongest in your body and use a pointer or guided eye movement to locate an eye position connected with that response. Once we find the position, you keep your gaze there while noticing what begins to emerge internally.

I may also use bilateral music through headphones. The sound moves gently between the left and right ears, which can support focused attention and help the brain remain engaged in processing while you stay connected to both the experience and the present moment. The music does not direct the session or determine what should come up. It serves as an additional layer of support while the nervous system works with the material.

Memories, emotions, images, physical sensations, impulses, or shifts in awareness may arise during the process. You do not need to explain everything as it happens, and you are not required to repeatedly retell the entire story. My role is to stay closely attuned to changes in your breathing, body, emotional state, and level of activation while helping the work move at a pace your nervous system can manage.

Who This Work Fits

‍ ‍

Brainspotting may be a good fit for people who have already developed meaningful insight into their history, triggers, and relational patterns, yet continue to experience responses that remain automatic, embodied, and difficult to change in the moment.

You may understand why conflict leads to shutdown, why closeness brings up fear, or why certain situations create immediate activation, while still noticing that this understanding does not reliably change what happens in your body once the response begins.

This work can be especially useful when the material feels difficult to reach through language, when repeated discussion has stopped creating meaningful movement, or when the nervous system continues responding to an earlier experience as though it is still happening in the present.

Brainspotting allows us to work more directly with those responses, while maintaining close attention to pacing, capacity, and the level of support needed for the process to remain manageable and productive.

How This Connects to My Broader Approach

‍ ‍

Brainspotting is one of several approaches that shape how I understand trauma, attachment, and nervous system change. My training in Brainspotting, EMDR, PSIP, TIP, and Internal Family Systems helps me pay attention to what is happening emotionally, physically, relationally, and internally at the same time.

These approaches influence how I recognize patterns of activation, shutdown, dissociation, protection, and disconnection, as well as the moments when something begins to shift. They also support a way of working that does not separate the body from the relationship or the present from the experiences that continue to shape it.

Whether or not Brainspotting is the primary approach we use, this orientation remains part of how I listen, track the process, and decide what kind of support may be most useful. I describe this broader clinical approach in more detail on my About page.
